The Maharashtra state government has declared a holiday for all schools in Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts due to the persistent heavy rains. This announcement was made by Maharashtra School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar in the state legislative council.
In addition to the school closures, approximately 50 flights were canceled by various airlines because of the adverse weather conditions.
Mumbai and its surrounding areas experienced intense rainfall from 1 am to 7 am on July 8. The heavy downpour led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, causing significant disruptions to suburban train services.
The Central Railway routes were particularly affected, with local train services severely impacted. Many roads in Mumbai were submerged after certain areas recorded over 300 mm of rainfall overnight, according to officials.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a statement in the morning, indicating that heavy rain was expected to continue throughout the day.
