Venezuela’s Presidential Election Sparks Controversy Amidst Conflicting Claims
In a dramatic turn of events, both Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro and his political rivals have declared victory in the recent presidential election, stirring skepticism from the United States and several regional nations about the official results favoring the incumbent.
With 80% of the votes tallied, the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced that Maduro secured over 51% of the vote, surpassing the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who garnered more than 44%.
However, the opposition presented a starkly different narrative. Opposition leader María Corina Machado, in a news conference, asserted that their records indicated González Urrutia had received 70% of the vote, compared to Maduro’s 30%.
“We won, and everyone knows it,” Machado proclaimed, emphasizing the opposition’s commitment to “defend the truth.”
“The entire international community knows what happened in Venezuela and how people voted for change,” she added.
