Former President Trump Questions the Necessity of Debating Vice President Harris Amid Campaign Pressure

In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about engaging in a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. This comes amid growing pressure from her campaign and the shifting political landscape following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.

Trump’s remarks were made during a conversation with Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo, where he discussed his potential Democratic opponent. While expressing a willingness to debate, he also hinted at the possibility of opting out. “I want to debate, and we seem to be leading in the polls by a significant margin,” Trump stated. He noted the impact of President Biden’s decision to step aside, adding, “She’s better than he is, but I think ultimately she’ll be worse than him.”

The former president pointed out that it was Biden’s team that initially pushed for a debate in June. Following this, many within the Democratic Party encouraged Biden to withdraw from the race, opening the door for Harris. Trump commented on the scenario, stating, “If I didn’t do the debate, they’d say, ‘Oh, Trump’s not doing the debate.’ It’s the same thing they’ll say now. I mean, right now, I ask, why should I do a debate? I’m leading in the polls, and everyone knows her, everyone knows me.”

These comments, recorded on Thursday and broadcast on Friday, reflect Trump’s ongoing ambivalence about debating Harris, who is steadily moving toward securing the Democratic nomination. His stance has varied; he initially told reporters that he would “absolutely” debate the vice president, only for his campaign to later indicate a hesitation until she officially becomes the nominee. In a subsequent interview with Fox News, Trump suggested that he would “probably” debate her but also mentioned he could argue against participating.

The campaigns for both Trump and Biden had previously agreed to a debate on September 10, which was to be hosted by ABC News. However, Trump has since suggested that the change in the Democratic ticket’s leadership could warrant adjustments to the debate’s format or the hosting network. He has specifically voiced his displeasure with ABC News and proposed that Fox News should host the debate instead.

Meanwhile, Vice President Harris addressed the situation during a rally in Atlanta on Tuesday night, where she energized a lively crowd. She directly challenged Trump, criticizing him for seemingly backing out of the debate. “Well, Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider meeting me on the debate stage because, as the saying goes, if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face,” Harris remarked, staring into the camera.
