Israeli Airstrikes Hit Lebanon, Targeting Hezbollah Strongholds
Israel has recently launched one of its most aggressive bombing campaigns on Lebanon since Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel following the October 7 attacks last year. On Saturday, Israeli forces claimed to have destroyed thousands of rocket launchers in response to ongoing hostilities from the Lebanese militant group.
Deadly Attack in Beirut: 37 Killed
A powerful Israeli airstrike on Friday devastated a multistory residential building in southern Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people, including several high-ranking commanders of the militant group. The strike is part of Israel’s continued efforts to weaken Hezbollah’s military presence and operational capabilities in the region.
Key Hezbollah Commander Among the Dead
One of the most significant casualties of the strike was Ibrahim Aqil, a commander of an elite Hezbollah unit. Aqil had long been a target of international scrutiny, as the U.S. had accused him of being involved in the 1983 bombing that killed 241 U.S. personnel. Hezbollah reported that 16 of its operatives were killed in the strike, dealing a major blow to the group’s leadership.
Wave of Explosions Further Weakens Hezbollah
This attack follows a series of smaller blasts earlier in the week, which hit Hezbollah communications devices, such as pagers and walkie-talkies. These explosions have caused significant damage, killing dozens and wounding thousands of others. The ongoing assaults have left Hezbollah struggling to maintain its command structure, as both its members and infrastructure face constant threats.
