Iran Signals Possible Retaliation
Israel Escalates Airstrikes in Gaza and Lebanon, While Iran Signals Possible Retaliation
As Israel steps up its airstrikes on Gaza and Lebanon, tensions are mounting with Iran, whose Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly directed the Supreme National Security Council to prepare a retaliatory strike. The directive, according to sources, followed a report detailing extensive damage to Iranian missile production and air defense systems, energy infrastructure, and a vital southern port, inflicted by Israeli attacks.
Khamenei’s response, officials say, was driven by a sense that inaction would be perceived as a defeat. Military strategists in Iran are reportedly identifying potential targets in Israel, though action may be delayed until after the U.S. elections, as Iran is wary of potentially bolstering former President Trump’s campaign.
Iran’s Quds Force Commander, Esmail Qaani, reaffirmed support for Hezbollah in Lebanon, which has faced significant strikes on its leadership and arsenal from Israel.
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at further possible strikes, stating that Israel’s recent actions grant it unprecedented reach within Iran’s borders. Following an Iranian missile strike on October 1—allegedly in response to Israel’s high-profile assassinations of key leaders—Israel targeted military sites within Iran on October 26, suggesting a readiness for continued military engagement.
