Trump Reaches Out to Arab and Muslim Voters in Michigan, Targeting Liz Cheney and Kamala Harris
Former President Donald Trump made a direct appeal to Arab and Muslim voters in Michigan, focusing on concerns about U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and specifically targeting Vice President Kamala Harris and former Congresswoman Liz Cheney. Trump, speaking at a rally in Warren, Michigan, described Harris as aligning with “warmongers like Liz Cheney,” using Cheney’s political stance to highlight his opposition to prolonged military engagements abroad.
“Many Muslim and Arab Americans have friends and family living in the Middle East,” Trump said, linking Harris’s campaign associations with Cheney to policies that he claims have destabilized the region. At the rally, he criticized Cheney, calling her a “radical war hawk” and referenced her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who played a significant role in the Iraq War. Trump added that Harris’s association with Cheney would not resonate with voters concerned about peace in the Middle East.
In the tight battleground of Michigan, which has one of the highest concentrations of Arab Americans in the U.S., Trump’s message was clear: he wants to secure support from a group that has traditionally leaned Democratic. Although Arab and Muslim Americans largely backed Joe Biden in 2020, there is reported discontent with the current administration, particularly around U.S. support for Israel amid rising violence in Gaza and Lebanon. Harris’s polling among Arab Americans is notably weaker than Biden’s previous support, potentially opening a door for Trump in this election.
Earlier in the day, Trump met with members of the Lebanese community in Dearborn, Michigan, where he emphasized his opposition to “endless wars” and framed himself as the candidate of peace. Trump, who in his first term had implemented a controversial travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority countries, is now reaching out to these communities, urging them to vote for a candidate who, he claims, will prioritize stability and peace.
Trump’s renewed focus on foreign policy, his criticism of Cheney, and his outreach to Arab and Muslim voters mark a calculated shift as he appeals to communities who may feel disillusioned with the current administration’s policies. With Michigan’s substantial Arab American population potentially playing a decisive role in the state’s outcome, Trump’s strategy aims to tap into those voters’ unique concerns about U.S. involvement in the Middle East, setting the stage for a closely watched race in the 2024 election.
