UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in New York: A Premeditated Attack
Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, tragically lost his life in what authorities have described as a “brazen, targeted attack.” The shocking incident occurred early Wednesday morning outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan, as confirmed by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
A Premeditated Tragedy
“This was not a random act of violence,” stated NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “All evidence points to a premeditated, deliberate attack.”
Thompson, 50, was on his way to UnitedHealth Group’s investor day event at the Hilton when the attack took place. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny detailed the timeline, revealing that patrol officers responded to a 911 call at 6:46 a.m. They found Thompson with gunshot wounds to his back and leg, and he was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
Details of the Incident
The shooter, described as wearing a light-colored jacket, a black face mask, and carrying a distinctive gray backpack, was reportedly lying in wait. According to police, the suspect arrived on foot about five minutes before Thompson reached the hotel. As Thompson approached alone, the attacker emerged from behind a parked car, firing several shots before fleeing the scene on an e-bike toward Central Park.
Authorities recovered three live 9 mm rounds, three shell casings, and a cellphone from the scene. While initial reports suggested the use of a firearm with a silencer, this detail remains under investigation.
Investigation and Public Assistance
The NYPD has yet to make an arrest and is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture. The attacker was last seen entering Central Park, leaving police and investigators working tirelessly to track him down.
A Life Cut Short
Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed that her husband had received threats prior to the attack but had not altered his travel habits. “He mentioned people making threats, possibly related to lack of coverage, but he continued with his normal routines,” she told NBC News.
Thompson, who had dedicated over 20 years to UnitedHealth Group, became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021 after a long career with the company. A resident of Maple Grove, Minnesota, he graduated as valedictorian from the University of Iowa. He leaves behind his wife and two children.
Community and Corporate Responses
UnitedHealth Group expressed its deep sorrow in a statement, describing Thompson as a “highly respected colleague and friend.” The company canceled its investor event in light of the tragedy, with CEO Andrew Witty addressing the attendees about the “serious medical situation” involving Thompson.
Governors Kathy Hochul of New York and Tim Walz of Minnesota also shared their condolences, with Hochul pledging full state support for the investigation.
A Legacy Marred by Challenges
Thompson’s death follows a ransomware attack earlier this year that targeted UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare unit, compromising the protected health information of millions.
This incident has shaken the healthcare and business communities alike, highlighting the dangers public figures sometimes face.
Call for Justice
As investigations continue, the NYPD remains committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice. The loss of Brian Thompson marks a somber moment for UnitedHealth Group, his family, and the industry he served for decades.
For those with information about the attack, the NYPD urges you to come forward to help solve this tragic case.
