In a recent federal court appearance, Ryan Wesley Routh, dressed in jail scrubs and restrained with shackles, appeared before the judge. During the hearing, he smiled and laughed a few times while conversing with his court-appointed lawyer, as observed by FOX News. Cameras were not allowed inside the courtroom, which focused on charges of firearm possession by a convicted felon and having a firearm with a removed serial number.
Throughout the approximately 10-minute hearing, Routh was attentive and answered all the judge’s questions. His formal arraignment is scheduled for September 30. Sources from FOX indicate that additional federal charges may be filed, with the current ones ensuring Routh remains in custody.
The judge outlined the penalties for the charges: up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the first offense, and up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the second. Routh acknowledged his understanding of these penalties.
When asked if he could afford a private attorney, Routh revealed his financial situation, stating that he earns around $3,000 monthly but has no savings or property. He owns two trucks in Hawaii, each valued at about $1,000, partially supports his 25-year-old son, and does not own any jewelry.
The U.S. Attorney, Adam McMichael, requested that Routh remain in custody, highlighting concerns about him being a flight risk and obstructing the case. The prosecution requested a detention hearing within three days, but the defense asked for five days to prepare, which the judge allowed.
This case continues to develop as Routh faces serious charges that could lead to significant prison time.
